Here are downloads that are free and that work good.  When doing computer work whether on-site  calls or working on a computer in the shop here in Redding, CA, these programs come in handy quite often.

• Office Programs
  • Open Office – A good alternative to Microsoft Office.
  • Office 2010 Beta – Free version at this time with the beta from Microsoft.
• Computer Utilities
  • Ccleaner – Cleans out unnecessary files from hard drive.
  • Coretemp – Nice application that shows temperatures of cpu cores.
  • 7Zip – Free alternative to winzip or winrar.  Works good.
  • CPUZID – Shows cpu and memory information easily.  Detailed information such as voltages, and ram speed.
  • Slysoft Virtual CloneDrive – Allows you to mount an iso or other image of a cd or dvd in Windows.
  • Power Menu, a nice program for some extra menu items to the windows control menu in addition to the standard “Close”, “Maximize”, etc options. The extra menus are: Always On Top, Transparency and Minimize To Tray.
  • ImgBurn, a useful program for creating ISO files of CD-ROM or DVD-ROM dics, and also writting the ISO files to a blank disc.
  • Windirstat – The best program for showing all files on a computer in a visual format.  Allows you to identify huge files easily.
• Audio / Video Applications
  • VLC – Nice video and audio player that has most video and audio codecs built in.
  • Winamp- A good skinnable audio and video player.  Includes supports for mod music.
    • Milkdrop – In my opinion, the best visualization plug in for Winamp.  Unbelievable!
  • Media Player Classic – A nice media player that has good options, but not too many.  The go to sleep after playback is great.
• Internet
  • Opera – Favorite Internet browser for a very long time.  Very fast and has good options.
  • Firefox – Okay Internet browser.  Has good support for Add-ons.
  • Filezilla – Nice ftp program with support for synchronized directory browsing.
• Photos
  • Picasa – A great photo program.  You have to try it.
